When I mentioned that my 2 year old son wanted to wear a tutu as part of his ninja costume for halloween, I got some raised eyebrows. “Well what are you going to do?” Um. The answer is obvious. I bought him the damned tutu. Some days my toddler wants to be a boy. Some days he wants to be a girl. Neither has any bearing on what he wears. On all of those days, I honor who he is. My child. Will he grow up to be trans or genderqueer? I don’t know. But it will never make a difference in how I feel about him. I only wish more people worked on the same principle.
